If you know Paula, you know that she is a big animal lover. It was one of just the many things that made me so happy to come and work for her. Paula is a woman after my own heart, with her menagerie of birds, chickens, and dogs. If that isn’t enough, she even provided us with an office cat, Norma Jean, who sits in on some of our meetings and makes sure everyone stays in line.

For the last nine months, I have been mom to a beautiful baby boy. But for the 31 years before that, I was foster mom to hundreds of stray pets. About ten years ago, I started rescuing pets on my own, which led to me founding Coastal Pet Rescue here in Savannah on my 23rd birthday in 2003. I was ecstatic when Paula decided to adopt an orange tabby from me shortly after I joined her team.

If you can imagine, running an all-volunteer non-profit can be rather taxing, and certainly not cheap. On top of veterinary expenses and providing for food, there’s a lot of travel involved, which means money for the gas and more miles on our main “puppymobile.” That’s why we look to grants and contests to help us with funding, and right now, we have a very big opportunity.
The CPR “puppymobile” has various uses, such as rescuing a mom and her seven puppies from an animal control shelter where they would have otherwise been euthanized, collecting 127 pounds of pet fur to be stuffed in oil booms along the Gulf Coast (May 2010), and delivering supplies to an animal shelter in Rome, GA to feed animals displaced by tornadoes (April 2011).

On Sunday, May 29th, you can log on to the Toyota USA Facebook page and help Coastal Pet Rescue win a brand new Toyota SUV to help transport pets. Our current vehicle is over 11 years old and has over 187,000 miles on it. How wonderful would it be to be for us to save money on repairs and be assured that our transports will be safe for the pets and volunteers? Best of all, it doesn’t cost anymore than a couple minutes of your time.

Boomer, our 1 year old golden retriever puppy we currently sponsor in Guide Dog training, came to visit Savannah, recently. Boomer and his "Walker", Sandy, met Sandy's parents for a wonderful meal at The Lady and Sons.

As part of his socialization and training, Sandy has raised Boomer since he was 8 weeks old. She takes him everywhere she goes so that he can get used to public and social situations. Boomer will soon return to Guide Dog School for more formal training and evaluation, but he really enjoyed meeting the incredible staff at The Lady and Sons and even had his picture made with "Paula" (@Paula_Deen on Twitter).

Meet Tucker and Oliver, the regal and handsome purebreed wards of Grey Dog Studio artist, Laurel Johns. Purebreed, magnificent and rescued, these lads divide their time between Laureal's Hird Island, GA stained glass art studio and summers in Tenants Harbor, ME.

Weimaraners are friendly, fearless, alert and obedient, but they are also assertive, bold, headstrong and loyal. As with most rescued animals, you may start out to do something good by adopting a homeless pet, but you soon find out they rescue you right back!

We'll share more about Laurel and her beautiful and extraordinary stained glass art in an upcoming Mermaids In Our Midst, so for right now enjoy these charming fellows and learn more about the joys of adopting one or any animal from your local shelter or rescue group.

Danny + Peeps = Gobble Gobble

By now, everyone knows our Danny. He's our mascot. He's our photo shoot model. He's our Look-Out Sentry. He's our Ambassador.
He's also a bottom-less disposal.
No matter what the holiday or what edible (and sometimes inedible) delight he spies he just has no willpower. Easter always brings to mind the time he devoured the PEEPS Easter Cake. The general rule for Danny's Gastronomic Escapades is so long as the object of his desire is at least 12 inches from the edge of the kitchen counter it's safe. The thing is Danny never read the rules and he never met a PEEPS he didn't like.

We had originally wanted to post the pics of Diane's beautiful Easter PEEPS Cake, so here's the only photo she managed to snap of it. Just minutes later she turned her back and it was gone. The only clue to what had happened in the blink of an eye was the tell-tale sign of PEEPS sugar around Danny's mouth!

Beach Bum Biscuits:Easter's On Its Way!

What color will your Easter eggs be this year? Haven't decided, yet? While walking my dogs around the island I found my inspiration!

I love the cool blue I saw on this painted flower pot in front of Nora's Cottage and I love the idea of an Easter basket full of bright blue eggs nestled in white grass and dotted with yellow PEEPS throughout. I used to think I had to have eggs in every shade imaginable, but lately I'm drawn to less colors and more contrast. I think I'll make one large basket of blues and yellows and whites for my Easter table and maybe I'll still dye more eggs in different colors to donate to a local hunt. I enjoy dyeing the eggs and hiding them, but since I don't have small children I won't be hiding any in the yard at Nora's.

Now, my dogs always enjoy finding treats, so I'll donate my brightly colored Easter eggs and instead hide Beach Bum Biscuits around the yard for my Pawsome Pals. Besides, each dog friendly cottage is well stocked with a supply of Beach Bum Biscuits and I'm sure my Wag Pack will find everyone!

Nora's Cottage has this wonderful, fenced-in back yard. I might just discover that nap I've been missing while the dogs find their treats!

Dog Tales: Sharing the Adventure

Talk to most successful people and you'll often hear, "The greatest joy in success comes from sharing what I have with those I love." It's a wonderful life lesson to be learned, for sure, and for those of us that are pet owners we often equate real happiness with our adventures we get to share with others...especially our pets!
A visit to Mermaid Cottages and Tybee Island is an adventure for everyone, including our pets! Although pets are not allowed on the beach there are still wonderful adventures to be had with our Pawsome Pals! Our pet friendly cottages have beautiful yards and most are fenced. Walking all around Tybee is a sensory delight for humans and dogs thanks to the beautiful architecture styles, island flora and fresh air. There are also great pet adventures to be had by boating over to Little Tybee Island and exploring the history of our coast around Fort Pulaski.
We have Bark Parks and stunning decks and porches and leisurely nap times that come with being on "Tybee Time". Don't just take our word for it. Just take a look at some of the smiles of our guests!

Behind all the pomp lies the most important circumstance. Unto every life a time comes when each soul is called to serve a cause that's greater than himself or herself and it represents everything that is good and honorable in this wonderful life we share.
Behind all the pomp stand many dedicated supporters and caretakers and remarkable talents that make a difference and make their lives a testimony for achievements . They know that what we earn is our living and what we give is our life. They have learned that a life of service is a life best lived.
THEY are the people who make up Guidedog.org. Since 1946, the Guide Dog Foundation For The Blind, Inc. has provided Guide Dogs to blind people who seek enhanced mobility and independence. THEY include the sponsors, the trainers, the puppy walkers and their many supporters from all across our world.
In our particular circumstance, this includes Mermaid Cottages and our commitment to sponsor Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever puppies to be trained as Guide Dogs and Service Dogs for persons with disabilities. We even have our own special Mermaid At Large, Sandy Leandro, a very busy travel and hospitality executive who is our Puppy Walker. Sandy has raised and nurtured and socialized our latest puppies to become the best at what they do.
Recently, Sandy travelled to New York for CELEBRATION SUNDAY to attend the graduation of Berkeley Springs, one of the dogs she
was puppy walker to and one of the puppies we sponsor. If you've ever attended a milestone event for someone in your life you can appreciate the pride and love and hopes and dreams and all the emotions that swell up inside as you witness the recognition of a worthwhile endeavor.

Thanks to Diane Kaufman and her devotion to championing the best that Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers have to offer through Mermaid Cottages, Beach Bum Biscuits and the life that she lives.

In this circumstance the pomp is well deserved and we honor Berkeley Springs for achieving his Celebration Sunday and meeting his forever companion as he walks through life. This is our celebration every day!

Serving With Honor: TONY

One of the puppies we sponsored for Guide Dog training, Tony, is about to be paired with his new owner. Tony has spent the first years of his life learning and training to be of service to someone in need.

Tony excelled during his first 18 months of being socialized by his "walker" where he learned proper etiquette in public. Next, he moved up through the ranks of training and apprenticing and he's now ready to change someone's life forever.

Of course, this comes as no surprise to us. You see, Tony is a namesake. He is named to honor and in memory of Tony Patrea, JR. Tony was a brilliant young man from Tybee who was well known throughout the island for his citizenship, courteousness and helpfulness. He volunteered for many Mermaid Cottages community service projects and he also loved animals dearly.

Tony Patrea, Jr made the most of his life while he was here and we know Tony, the Guide Dog, will make his mark on someone's life just like his namesake.

We remember Tony Patrea, Jr and we honor his legacy through our Tony's life of service!

BOOMER And The Journey To Service

BOOMER, our youngest Golden Retriever puppy in training to be a Guide Dog, dropped by for a visit, recently.

He just turned one last month, so our young lad is growing up. He'll soon be returning to Guide Dog School for more training.

Boomer paid us a visit at Seaside Sisters and he gave their new expansion several tale wags! He also posed for pictures with everyone and even did a little modeling for our Mermaid Cottages section in the shop.

He has a very passionate soul and is super vigilant, so he will be the perfect service companion to a person with disabilities some day.

We're just glad we get to be his biggest cheerleaders and we're honored to take this journey with him. We love having Boomer in our neighborhood for visits!

One of our magnificent mermaid manors is getting re-branded. She's getting, fluffed, styled, coiffed, beautified and her debut is coming soon.

We asked various arbiters of good taste, "What makes a great beauty memorable?"

How can we make an already remarkable home be even more inviting?

One of the style icons we queried was our own Mermaid Mascot, Danny.

You see, when it comes to admiring something beautiful or enjoying something sinfully delicious,

Danny's our Go-To guy. So, we asked him. "Danny. What's one feature that makes a great beauty truly memorable?"

In true Danny style he just plopped down, let out a "I'm in heaven" yawn and wafted off into doggy dreamland on these beautiful hardwood floors.

Denver Must Be Danny's Long Lost Sister

A You Tube video of Denver, the Guiltiest Dog in America, made the rounds this week and even landed Denver a guest spot on ABC's Good Morning America, too.

Like everyone else we got tickled at Denver's walk of shame after her owner discovered she had devoured a bag of cat treats while he was away.

We were tickled that someone else has a lab like our Danny. Danny is one of our Mermaid Cottages mascots and frequently models for our photo shoots. He truly is a beautiful soul and very loving, but he's had a few guilty episodes of his own.

To date and over the years, Danny has snarfed down cupcakes, a sour cream peach pound cake, bags of confectioners sugar, an Easter Coconut Cake decorated with Peeps, flour, and a few bags of Paula Deen's Cheese Biscuit Mix! He's even had to make a couple trips to the vet to have his stomach examined for various combinations of non-doggy friendly "treats" he confiscated without permission.

He's a cool customer. Usually, so long as a food item is at least 12 inches from the edge of the counter we consider it a "Danny Free Zone". But, if we're off by a couple of inches or if it's something truly too good to pass up like cakes and Peeps, Danny will find a way. Initially, he seems aloof and totally not interested, but turn your back for just a moment and it's carpe diem!

Maybe Denver will visit us some day and teach Danny the walk of shame. Until then, we have to stay one or two steps ahead of him!

Does your pet demonstrate its ability to parent and give care?

In our Mermaid family we have Moxie, a West Highland Terrier. She's never had puppies, but she's always been a terrific mom! She's 11 years old and she still has the very first toy we gave her, a stuffed duck. She has mothered and protected that little duck from the other dogs and we can often find her napping with it. She even mothers our Dachshund, Barney, and he's older than her!

We also saw this great story about another Westie, four year old Winston, on peoplepets.com. When his human family set up a birdbath and added some toy ducks, Winston immediately assumed guard duty. He dutifully watches over and protects his duckies!

Some of the best life lessons we learn about love and care come from our pets! If you pet has a great knack for TLC, be sure to let us know and post it on our FACEBOOK!

Say NO To Potty Mouths!

Remember the good old days when all we had to worry about was how many frogs we had to kiss before we found our prince?

Now, we have to worry about the potty mouths of our pets!

Dr. Oz says puckering up for our pooches can actually make us sick! He says little puppy kisses can be fine, but we have to remember that most of our dogs are scavengers and let's face it...they're not always too particular about what they put in their mouths!

Toxocara, Salmonella, Guardia, Hookworm, Tapeworm, and many others can be found in the mouths of our pets. And, Dr. Oz adds that some of our pets' bad behaviors we ignore could be the cause of household illnesses. If your pet, especially cats, go outside and walk through yucky stuff and then hop up on your counter tops they are contaminating places where you prepare food. If you allow your pets to sleep in your bed you have to realize what's been in their mouths and on their paws is now where you sleep!

What can you do? Be sure to always wash your hands after handling any animal, don't let them rummage in garbage or raw meat, wipe/clean their paws when they come in from outside, keep pets off surfaces where you prepare food and always maintain a healthy pet with regular visits to the vet!

Mary Kay Andrews and the K-9 Caper

Ya'll know we love our Mary Kay Andrews and the roars of laughter and adventure she brings to our Mermaid family!

Recently, she shared with us a fan letter she received from Canada. Of course we were excited, too, because we get to meet her wonderful fans who come to Tybee just to stay in her beautiful Breeze Inn beach home.

When she showed us the email she was beaming about the wonderful sentiments of the writer, Christine Pharand. Mary Kay Andrews was beaming and proud. We were intrigued!

We say this with love. Christine is a Border and Customs Officer with the Canada Border Services Agency. And she's a K-9 Officer. The only thing we love more than our Mary Kay Andrews is a good, old fashioned scandal! Having both in one was even better!

Had our Mary Kay Andrews somehow crossed the border into Canada while on one of her junking forays? We've all been in danger before when Mary Kay has seen something interesting at an estate sale or junk pile and we happened to walk in between her and a treasured discovery. Had she maybe run a covert operation across international lines just to pull something from a trash pile? Had the Canadian Border Patrol posted a capture order for our truant Mary Kay?

Well, as it turns out Christine really is a fan! In addition to her search and rescue work that takes her and her K-9 team around the world, Christine also comes to Savannah to work with rescue training! Christine and her rescue dogs, Boomer and Ranger, were in Savannah this weekend and made the trek over to Tybee to meet Mary Kay during her book signing and reading at Seaside Sisters' Grand Re-Opening!

Take a look at these magnificent search and rescue dogs and the great fun everyone had meeting them with Christine.

Well, it was just another adventurous day in the life of our favorite low country author, Mary Kay Andrews!

Irish Heritage:IRISH WOLFHOUND

What's the tallest dog breed?

The Irish Wolfhound!

This largest and tallest galloping hound combines power and swiftness with keen eyesight. Easy-going and quiet, these dogs create a very strong bond with their human families. Though not normally aggressive around other domestic dogs, they are natural hunters and may course another dog. This is not a fighting or territorial behavior.

They are very affectionate to children and seem to know they need to be gentle, despite their great size. They also seem to be able to sense ill will or danger towards their human family which makes them excellent guardians, but not necessarily good guard dogs.

Irish Heritage:KERRY BLUE TERRIER

The beautiful and regal Kerry Blue Terrier!

Although it's commonly believed they hail from County Kerry in Ireland, the Kerry Blue Terrier actually originated in Tipperary!

With a soft, wavy coat and not undercoat, the Kerry Blue has fine textured, almost human like hair. It's low or no shedding makes it a terrier-ific family pet and remarkably it has little or no scent. Some even say Kerry Blue's have a pleasant scent which means no doggy odors here!

These loyal, affectionate giants are gentle with children, but they also get used alot as Police Dogs in Ireland. They're excellent herders, strong and fast!

IRISH HERITAGE:Soft Coated Wheaton Terriers

We're celebrating Irish Heritage with five of the top Irish Pet Breeds! How about these Soft Coated Wheaton Terriers! This loving, active Irish breed has very little shedding so they make outstanding pets for anyone with allergies and their easy going demeanor makes them a great choice as therapy dogs. There are four coat varieties: Traditional Irish, Heavy Irish, English and American. They're hypoallergenic, low maintenance, love people, smart and easy to train. Just brush them once a day and their hair is more like human hair; it just keeps growing and is easy to maintain. They're great watch dogs, meaning they're great with children, but non-aggressive, so not so well suited as a guard dog.

Irish Heritage:The Irish Setter

Even though the original Irish Setters were bred and trained as setting or hunting dogs, these modern day setters are now in more beneficial use as therapy dogs.

Patients enjoy stroking the silky manes of these magnificent dogs and Irish Setters have even found great success in the READ Programs. This is where Irish Setters are used as therapy dogs in schools and students are allowed to read to the dogs. A real people dog, an Irish Setter Therapy Dog will lie down and relax while a student reads to it. It doesn't correct or interrupt the student, so it helps the student to get past the anxieties of reading in front of others.

Their pleasant demeanor makes them great family pets, but they are not aggressive enough to be considered a guard dog. We say Irish Setters are great therapy for everyone!

Berkeley Springs: A Guide To Life

We received this update on Berkeley Springs, one of our sponsored Guide Dog puppies in training. He's very close to graduating and may be paired with a person with a disability, soon!

Berkeley Springs is finishing up his guide training and is working on the subways, doing city work and crowd work, taking country walks, mall work and riding escalators. They are increasing distraction levels on all of his work and maintaining levels of concentration. He has some slight noise sensitivity, but that is all. His trainer says that he loves him and he is doing very well.

Join us in sending our well wishes and support to Berkeley Springs as he reaches this important milestone in his training. His life of service will mean a more independent life and freedom for a person with disabilities.

Go forth young Berkeley Springs! You can do it!

A Soldier's Pet Finds A Home

What happens to a solider's pet when he or she gets deployed?

Many times our men and women who serve in the military get deployed and must leave their beloved pet behind. In times past, many members of the military had no other choice than to turn their pet family members into a shelter, never knowing what might become of them.

Since 2005, Guardian Angels For Soldier's Pet has been providing foster family options for service men and women and their pets.

Foster families volunteer to provide a temporary home for a soldier's pet while away on deployment. This organization is dedicated to the support of service men and women and their pets to ensure they are reunited once their deployment ends. It's a fantastic way for members of the military and peace keeping forces to retain ownership of their pets and to have them well cared for while they're away.

If you've got room in your home and your heart to be a foster home for military pets please register and help reunite our brave service men and women with their pets. It's a great way to say Thank You for those who serve.

Well, I guess we can be glad they have great taste, too!

Here's a super idea that's sure to pamper your pet in style and make use of something most of us just have lying around taking up closet space: A Suitcase Doggy Bed!

When I first saw this idea it was on a DIY site, http://www.designsprout.com, but since then they're popping up everywhere!

This is a great way to lure your pet off your furniture and into their own sanctuary. You can custom design the interior to compliment your pet and it's a great way to travel with their toys and food bowls. Just pack 'em up and away you go!

If you make it yourself from an old suitcase, just be sure to fashion some way to insure it will stay open when your pet is in it.

My dogs are my best travel partners and they like to do it in style!

You're Late! What's Your Excuse? RUFF!

A New study suggests dogs may be affected by how long we leave them alone.

It's generally believed that dogs, like most animals, are stuck in time. In general terms, dogs can't think back to past events and/or anticipate future ones.

Now, if your dogs are like mine, they seem to know what I'm going to do before I do! Many times I've drug myself home after a long day only to feel the greatest joy of seeing those cute little faces peeking out the window as I drive up. We've all said it. When it seems no one else has anything nice to say to us or about us our dogs save the day with a wag of their tails and their barks of love.

Researchers believe that dogs may seem like they can tell when we've been away from them for long periods of time, but it could be that we humans are also reminding them that we're late by our actions when we see them.

I don't know about you, but I'm just glad they're happy to see me. It means a lot!

But, there's one sure way that your pets won't get lonely and you won't suffer the guilt of leaving them. Bring them with you to Mermaid Cottages and Tybee Island!

Special Service Dogs For Special Needs

Service Dogs can be trained to assist persons with many different types of disabilities...even those that can't be readily seen.

One such special type of service dog is a Mental Health Dog. A Mental Health Dog is trained to assist persons with various types of mental or nervous disorders, such as agoraphobia. Most animals can sense how a person is feeling and many are naturally talented in soothing and consoling someone in need.

If you've ever met Danny, Diane Kaufman's yellow lab, you know just how incredible a giant "Lab Hug" can make you feel.

Danny is quite the character and can often be seen peering from the windows of Mermaid Manor or riding shotgun in Diane's SUV. He's also a big ham at heart as he loves to pose and model for the camera in many of the photoshoots and videos for Mermaid Cottages.

You can just be sitting around and Danny will sometimes come up to you and hoist his huge paws around your neck and nuzzle your face with his. He's a charmer and he gives the best hugs!

We received this heartfelt letter today from Cynthia Sharpley of EVERYDAY ERRANDS by way of Jane Coslick

Hi Dear Pet Friends,

This dog was found with an awful and tight choke collar around his neck. And despite it, he is a very loveable and happy boy. We can learn so much from animals.

He loves car rides. As his rescuer drove him to the vet, he sat in the front seat like a good boy. He is not neutered, but appears to be a healthy 40 pounds dog. No microchip was found. He loves kisses and is a gentle and playful sweetheart.

His rescuer, Leza Shore, already has three rescued dogs of her own and she is unable to keep one more. She has him temporarily in the garage since one of her dogs is agressive.

If anyone is able to give this boy a temporary or permanent home please contact Leza at

What's In A Name?

They told me the big black lab's name was Reggie, as I looked at him lying in his pen.
The shelter was No-Kill, clean and the people really friendly.
I'd only been in the area 6 months, but everywhere I went in the small college town people were welcoming and open. Everyone waves when you pass them on the street.

But something was still missing as I attempted to settle in to my new life here and I thought a dog couldn't hurt. Give me someone to talk to. And I had just seen Reggie's advertisement on the local news. The shelter said they had received numerous calls right after, but they said the people that had come down to see him didn't seem to look like "Lab People", whatever that meant. They must've thought I did.

But at first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me in giving me Reggie and his things which consisted of a dog pad, a bag of toys which almost all were brand new tennis balls, his dishes and a sealed letter from his previous owner. See, Reggie and I didn't really hit it off when we got home.  We struggled for two weeks (which is how long the shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home). Maybe it was the fact I was trying to adjust, too. Maybe we were too much alike.

For some reason his stuff (except for the tennis balls...he wouldn't go anywhere without two stufffed in his mouth) got tossed in with all my other unpacked boxes. I guess I really didn't think he'd need all of his old stuff; that I'd get him new things once he settled in. But, it became pretty clear pretty soon that he wasn't going to.

I tried the normal commands the shelter told me he knew, ones like "sit", "stay", "come" and "heel" and he'd follow them-when he felt like it. He never really seemed to listen when I called his name- sure, he'd look in my direction after the fourth or fifth time I said it, but then he'd just go back to doing whatever. When I'd ask again you could almost see him sigh and grudgingly obey.

This just wasn't going to work. He chewed a couple shoes and some unpacked boxes. I was a little too stern with him and he resented it. I could tell the friction got so bad that I couldn't wait for the two weeks to be up and when it was I was in full-on search mode for my cell phone amid my unpacked stuff. I remembered leaving it on the stack of boxes for the guest room, but I also mumbled, rather cynically, the damned dog probably hid it on me.

Finally, I found it, but before I could punch up the shelter's number I also found his dog pad and other toys from the shelter. I tossed the dog pad in Reggie's direction and he sniffed and wagged; some of the most enthusiasm I'd seen since bringing him home. But, then I called, "Hey, Reggie. You like that? Come here and I'll give you a treat." Instead, he sort of glanced in my direction-maybe glared is more accurate - and then gave a discontented sigh and flopped down-with his back to me.

Well, that's not going to do it either, I thought. And, I punched the shelter phone number.

But, I hung up when I saw the sealed envelope. I had completely forgotten about that, too. "Okay, Reggie," I said outloud, "let's see if your previous owner has any advice."

To Whoever Gets My Dog,

Well, I can't say I'm happy you're reading this, a letter I told the shelter could only be opened by Reggie's new owner. I'm not even happy writing it. If you're reading this it means I just got back from my last car ride with my lab after dropping him off at the shelter. He knew something was different. I have packed up his pad and toys before and set them by the back door for a trip, but this time...it's like he knew something was wrong. And, something is wrong which is why I have to go to try to make it right.

So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it will help you bond with him and he with you.

First, he loves tennis balls. The more the merrier. Sometimes, I think he's part squirrel the way he hordes them. He usually always has two in his mouth and he tries to get a third one in there. Hasn't done it, yet. Doesn't matter where you throw them, he'll bound after them, so be careful-really don't do it by any roads. I made that mistake once and it almost cost him dearly.

Next, Commands. Maybe the shelter staff already told you, but I'll go over them, again. Reggie knows the obvious ones-sit, stay, come, heel. He knows hand signals; "back" to turn around and go back when you put your hand straight up and "over" if you put your hand out right or left. "Shake" for shaking water off and "paw" for a high five. He does "down" when he feels like lying down - I bet you could work on that with him some more. He knows "ball" and "food" and "bone" and "treat" like nobody's business.

I trained Reggie with small food treats. Nothing opens his ears like little pieces of hot dog.

Feeding schedule: Twice a day. Once about seven in the morning and again at six in the evening. Regular store bought stuff. The shelter has the brand.

He's up on his shots. Call the clinic on 9th street and update his info with yours. They'll make sure to send you reminders for when he's due. Be forewarned. Reggie hates the vet. Good luck getting him in the car. I don't know how he knows when it's time to go to the vet, but he knows.

Finally, give him some time. I've never been married, so it's only been Reggie and me for his whole life. He's gone everywhere with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if you can. He sits well in the back seat and he doesn't bark or complain. He just loves to be around people and me, most especially.

Which means that this transition is going to be hard with him going to live with someone else.

And, that's why I need to share one more thing with you.

His name's not Reggie.

I don't know what made me do it, but when I dropped him off at the shelter I told them his name was Reggie. He's a smart dog. He'll get used to it and will respond to it, of this I have no doubt. But, I just couldn't bear to give them his real name. For me to do that, it seemed so final. That handing him over to the shelter was as good as me admitting I'd never see him again. And, if I end up coming back, getting him, and tearing up this letter, it means everything's fine. But, if someone else is reading it, well it means that his new owner should know his real name. It'll help you bond with him. Who knows. Maybe you'll even notice a change in his demeanor if he's been giving you problems.

His real name is "Tank."

Because that is what I drive.

Again, if you're reading this and you're from the area, maybe my name has been on the news. I told the shelter that they couldn't make "Reggie" available for adoption until they received word from my company commander. See, my parents are gone. I have no siblings. No one I could've left Tank with...and it was my only real request of the Army upon my deployment to Iraq. That they make one phone call to the shelter...In the event...to tell them that Tank could be put up for adoption. Luckily, my colonel is a dog guy, too, and he knew where my platoon was headed. He said he'd do it personally. And, if you're reading this he made good on his word.

Well, this letter is getting downright depressing even though, frankly, I'm just writing it to my dog. I couldn't imagine if I was writing it for a wife and kids and family. But still, Tank has been my family for the last six years, almost as long as the Army has been my family.

And now I hope and pray that you make him part of your family and that he will adjust and come to love you the same way he loved me.

That unconditional love from a dog is what I take with me to Iraq as an inspiration to do something selfless, to protect innocent people from those who would do terrible things...and to keep those terrible people from coming over here. If I have to give up Tank in order to do it I am glad to have done so. He is my example of service and love. I hope I honored him by my service to my country and comrades.

All right. That's enough. I deploy this evening and have to drop this letter off at the shelter. I don't think I'll say another good-bye to Tank, though. I cried too much the first time. Maybe I'll peek in on him and see if he finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth.

Good luck with Tank. Give him a good home and give him an extra kiss goodnight - every night - from me.

I folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope. Sure, I had heard of Paul Mallory. Everyone in town knew him, even new people like me. Local kid. Killed in Iraq a few months ago. Posthumously earning the Silver Star when he gave his life to save three buddies. Flags has been at half mast all summer.

I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staring at the dog.

"Hey, Tank." I said quietly.

The dog's head whipped up, his ears cocked and eyes bright.

"C'mere, boy."

He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on the hardwood floor. He sat in front of me, his head tilted, searching for the name he hadn't heard in months.

"Tank," I whispered.

His tail swished.

I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each time his ears lowered, his eyes softened and his posture relaxed as a wave of contentment seemed to flood him. I stroked his ears, rubbed his shoulders, buried my face into his scruff and hugged him.

"It's me now, Tank. Just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me." Tank reached up and licked my cheek. "So, whatdaya you say we play some ball?"  His ears perked up, again. "Yeah. Ball. You like that? Ball? Tank tore from my hands and disappeared into the next room.

And, when he came back he had three tennis balls in his mouth.

Every person who has served in or is currently serving in our military is a hero. Every man. Every woman.
No matter what your personal beliefs and convictions. Treat them as heroes and say "Thank You" every chance you get.

If you can't do anything else, please consider becoming a foster family for pets our military has to surrender in order to serve and protect our nation and your home.

Bring your own trash bags and bring lots of family and friends!

The less trash there is on the beach the less trash there will be in the beautiful waters off Tybee and this means less chance the sea turtles, dolphins and Right Whales will think the harmful trash is something for them to eat.

Homecoming For A HERO

You're going home and relaxing, she said. You're going home.

Eli, a black lab specially trained as a bomb sniffing dog in the military was on duty when his handler was struck by a Taliban fighter's sniper bullet. Eli was the first to reach his handler's side and he guarded over his fallen handler even as other soldiers tried to pull him away.

Eli had sniffed out two bombs already that day. Against all rules, Eli had slept in his handler's cot or sleeping bag. Always. Eli had only eaten the same rations as his handler. Always. Eli was a soldier. Always. Eli's handler wrote on his FACEBOOK page, Whatever's mine is his.

That was a promise and it was forever.

Eli has now been adopted and has joined his new family on their ranch. It's the same ranch where his handler grew up. Eli has been adopted by his handler's parents.

Eli's handler was Pfc Colton Rusk, the 20 year old son of Kathy and Darrell Rusk.

Mermaid Cottages and Beach Bum Biscuits honor and remember Pfc Colton Rusk and Eli for their bravery and service to our country and everyone evereywhere in this world.

We salute and thank the Rusk family for their loyalty and for opening their home to Eli.

Hey, Puppy-Wuppy! You're So Cute!

Guide Dogs and Service Dogs are beautiful animals, especially when they're puppies in training, but there's an etiquette to keep in mind when you see one on the job!

* Any time you see an animal in a harness or vest know that the dog is working and you should not talk to,
   touch or do anything to distract him from his job.
* Do not treat the animal as a pet. He's a highly trained professional.
* Don't assume the dog needs your advice or instruction. The only person he should listen to is his handler.
* Don't try to take control of any situation you assume is unfamiliar to the handler or the dog.
* Don't walk on the dog's left side. That's the side reserved for his handler. Do walk on the right side and
   a few paces behind the dog and handler.
* Don't attempt to grab a hold of or steer anyone with a guide dog. Always ask the handler if any
   assistance is needed.
* Be patient and polite to both the handler and the dog. You'll be impressed with their skills!
* A handler and dog have a special bond and both are constantly learning.
* Never try to feed a trained dog. Part of the special bond between a handler and his dog is the master's
   responsibility to provide well balanced nutrition for the working dog.
* Never allow children to tease or abuse a service animal. Teach children to respect the special job a
   service animal has to do.
* Don't allow your family pet(s) to challenge or engage a service animal when it's working.
* Never encourage a service animal to disobey it's master. That includes inviting a service dog to jump up
   on furniture when it's against the master's rules.
* Never allow a service dog to go outside unsupervised. Understand and appreciate its value to it's handler.
* Always talk to the handler, not the dog. You might cause the dog to make a serious mistake.

The relationship between a handler and a working dog is a special brand of teamwork. Appreciate it, honor it and respect it.

Anyone that shares his/her life with a pet knows they can be amazing and just as with our children sometimes we gush about how smart and talented ours are!

The term "Service Dog" covers a lot of territory and whether you call them a Guide Dog or Service Dog or Assistance Dog they all make it possible for many persons with disabilities to lead astonishingly normal lives.

Here are a few of the specialties Service Dogs are trained in:

Guide Dog
Guide Dogs are the eyes for a blind or sight impaired person.

Hearing Dog
A Hearing Dog alerts its handler to sounds.

Seizure Alert/Response Dog
A Seizure Alert Dog alerts and responds to its handler when it senses the handler may be having a seizure.

Mobility Assist Dog
A Mobility Assist Dog is the arms and legs for a disabled person.

Psychiatric Service Dog
A Psychiatric Service Dog enables a person with a psychiatric disorder to calm down and can enable the person to function in public.

There are certainly some days my dogs are my miracle workers and they always know when I could use a kiss and a hug!

Grace says:

Dear Diane and the Mermaids,

Just want to send you some proof of our lovely time at Doodlebug Cottage and a tail-wagging THANK YOU for the delicious biscuits you left in the cottage for me. My parents really appreciate the name tags you provided. They put one on my collar and one on my harness the whole time we were there. My parents always worry about my safety and they said that is very thoughtful of you to have the tags available. You must love dogs! I wasn't allowed to get on the furniture at my home so I did the same at Doodlebug. I have my own bed and I sleep on the floor, anyway. My mom said that you were so very nice not to charge me extra, so I made sure to leave the cottage as nice and clean as when we first checked in. I really enjoy Tybee Island. I love the daily walks where I can smell so many interesting trees, shrubs, posts, grassy areas, fences...

Thank you for letting me come to your house. I heard my parents talking and they both said they wanted to return to your house again soon! I can't wait!

THE RESCUE

As I put in the application, she is a stray I found. It looked like she had had puppies, and she was drying up. I had her checked to see if she was pregnant, and she was not, so I had her spayed on July 15t. I have had her Rabies shot, and I had planned on taking her back to get the rest of her shots, too. My vet did a heartworm check, and she tested negative.

I wanted to give you a little background on her. We found her wandering on Highway 200 in Ocala on Saturda evening, June 27th. It was during the time when we had been having scalding temps in the 100s. She was unbelieveably filthy, exhausted, and her pads were raw and blistered so badly it pained her terribly to stand on them. She had given up and collapsed on the side of the road. She is so loving and sweet and she is a talker. She is not a barker, but a talker. She tells you when she needs to go out, and she tells you if she feels the need to tell you she loves you. I guess I am telling you this because I really want her to have a home where she is inside as part of the family-not stuck outside.

This dog had a micro-chip placed pror to getting lost. Unfortunately, the family did not register it. We never found out who the owner was.

STRIKE A POSE!

PULIS? Are You Pulling My Leg?

I saw two of these awesome, but curious looking dogs recently in Los Angeles. I couldn't help but laugh to myself about how cool they must be and I'd bet they'd keep my floors spic and span!

This breed is know as Puli, a type of Mop Dog. It's a Hungarian, medium small breed used for herding and protection. Not to be confused with the much larger Komondors which are always white, the pulis are smaller and most often black. Their coat naturally grows in cord like dreadlocks.

If you don't own an active livestock farm for the Pulis to herd and protect just know they will soon regard your family as their herd and will keep you and your brood in line without hesitation.

This active dog is not well suited to in-home living and definitely not for confined spaces, but if you're looking for a fantastic security dog that will get lots of exercise and love you, to boot, get a mop!

I'm rushing out to get my tickets early because I know the lines will be around the movie theatre!

What? Sweden?

The world's first movie theatre for dogs recently opened in Sweden! FOX Home Entertainment pitched the idea to the organizers of the annual pet exhibition and it was met with barks of approval. Pedigree provided goody bowls filled with doggy snacks and the result was a howling success!

If you're like me you'd probably enjoy more places and activities where our dogs could be with us and this is a fantastic idea. The organizers were so pleased they plan to offer doggy cinema again next year!

Tybee Bark Parks-It's a Dog's World

When you visit Tybee Island, GA you'll find a city that cares about the welfare of dogs and their owners. Dogs are not allowed on the beach at any time, but their are two Bark Parks on Tybee Island.

Make sure you make arrangements for the proper care of your dog before you head to the beach. Cars get deadly hot after only a few minutes. Dogs found left alone in locked cars will be rescued, even if it means breaking the window glass.

The Tybee Bark Parks are located at the intersection of Van Horne and Fort Streets, between the Police station and the River's End Campground and RV Park. The Bark Parks are open from dawn til dusk each day.

At Mermaid Cottages, everyone is welcome and that includes your furiends, too! As with all house guests, the key to getting invited back is to be a conscientious, thoughtful and polite visitor. Here's some information about bringing pets to Mermaid Cottages and Tybee Island that will surely win you points in the good manners department.

We love dogs, and many of our cottages are dog-friendly. Please check the cottage listings to determine which of our homes allow dogs.

Mermaid Cottages Pet Policies and Island Rules for Dogs:

•Barking: The Tybee Island Noise Ordinance includes dogs barking. The fine is $300 per incident, and the city will fine you if any of the neighbors complain of the noise. Please be very aware of this ordinance.

•Pet Fee for Mermaid Cottages is $100 for up to two dogs ($100 for each additional dog).

•Pets are not allowed on the furniture or beds.

•Please clean up any pet "poo" in the yard.

•Dogs must be on a leash when walked.

•Crates-- if you are bringing puppies, we do ask you to crate when you are not home, or at the very least do not let them have the run of the home.

•Flea and tick protection : fleas are here on Tybee in full force, so please be sure your pets are current on their flea protection medicine.

•Dogs are NOT allowed on the beach, and again-- the city will fine you if you are caught. $300 per dog.

Tybee Island is a fantastic place to take long walks and your dog will enjoy it just as much as you. It's all part of the magical experience of Mermaid Cottages. Come practice the art of slowing down. For you, your family, your friends and your pet!

Berkeley as just a pup!

We are always so excited to hear from our friend Sandy, especially when she has news about the guide dog puppies we sponsor! Sandy recently shared this email with us about our star pupil, Berkeley:

Berkeley Springs- They are now working on him taking more responsibility for the walks. He has begun traffic training and will start their blindfold walks soon. They are working on his being able to concentrate while coming under more pressure to make decisions that lead to a successful and safe walk. The trainer has no problems to report at this time. He is still a great dog to work with and his trainer is very much enjoying him.

We couldn't be prouder of Berkeley! He is going to make someone a wonderful guide someday soon...I can feel it. Remember, you can help us with this great cause. Your stay with Mermaid Cottages will continue the efforts to support Southeastern Guide Dogs' Puppy Sponsorship Program. The dogs of Key West, Florida

I'm spending a magical month in Key West- an island I truly love. I adore Tybee Island, Georgia, but there is something about being at this end of the road ( literally!) island that just speaks to my soul. I think it's the combination of amazing cottages, unique and interesting people from all over the world who have landed here, world class restaurants ( some fancy, some shacks) and the weather. Even though we're going thru a cold spell, it just doesn't matter.

The dogs and I literally take walks all day long. I love finding interesting things to take pictures of with my cell phone camera. I keep finding dog "stuff" including dog statues. Here are two that took my breath away. Just down the street from my cottage, I think they are too big labs. The owner thinks they are great danes, but I think they are labs. Big, glorious labs guarding their humans and home. And best of all, all decorated for the holidays! This whole home is beautiful and all lit up, but the dogs are the best part.

Enjoy! I know I do on a daily basis!

Key West Cool!

I'm spending a little time in sunny Key West, Florida this month! Of course, Max and Danny made the trip with me, and we are having a blast. As you can see, Max took no time at all to adopt the Key West attitude. He hit the porch and quickly relaxed! Jimmy Buffet would be proud, huh?

My mom and a few others have joined us and, between us all, we have really put the dogs through their paces strolling Duvall Street. It's really been great seeing all the beautiful, unique Christmas decorations here! But, I think Max and Danny have had enough sight-seeing for a day or two...it's nap time now!

Safe and Happy Holidays for Your Pet!

It's holiday time again, and that means loads of yummy holiday goodies! But, a lot of our favorite treats aren't all that great for your dog or cat. Chocolate, coffee, alcoholic drinks, grapes, raisins, onions, and Macadamia nuts might sound wonderful to you, but they are all harmful choices for your pets. It's a good practice to feed your pet their own food before the festivities start, so they will be satisfied. Also, try to avoid letting your pet have table scraps. It's just a good idea, so you don't end up spending your holiday at the vet office!

The American Humane Association also has a lot of information about how to make the entire holiday season safer for your pets! Cold Noses, Warm Hearts

Those of us who have pets know they are great therapists. They are great listeners, comforters, and friends. But, did you know the medical community suggests pets are good for your health? Like we needed another reason to love our furry children, right?!
They spread love where ever they go, so why not share that feeling? The Tybee Island Oceanside Nursing Home wants the community to know they encourage anyone to visit with their dogs! Dogs can be so beneficial to both physical and psychological healing, especially for the elderly and isolated. You know how great your dog makes you feel, so think about sharing the love! If you believe you have a dog that could warm the hearts of patients, check out these easy steps to ensure the safety of your dog and those in the nursing home.

Determine if your dog would be a good candidate! The dog must be reliable, predictable, trained, and loving.
Contact the manager at the nursing home (912-786-4511) about 1 hour before your visit. the require nothing more than that your dog be on a leash and that you show proof of current vaccinations. Your dog needs to be healthy and up-to-date on their shots!
Make sure your dog is well groomed, including well trimmed nails.
Keep your dog on a 4 foot leash, no retractables please!
Be a responsible owner. Have control over your dog at all times. help encourage interaction between your dog and the patient.
A few precautions: make sure your dog minds his or her manners and doesn't try to eat anything, from the floor or table scraps. Watch for medications in the area that may be hazardous to your pet.
Start slow and make sure your pet will be comfortable around things like wheelchairs, walkers, and other medical equipment.

Ghost Dogs of Bonaventure Cemetery

It's October...the perfect time for spooky stories! The Savannah area is no stranger to the spirit world...we are The Most Haunted City in America after all!
Did you know legend has it that the Bonaventure Cemetery is prowled by a pack of ghostly K-9s? There have been reports of visitors to the cemetery feeling as if they are being followed! Though no one has ever seen the dogs, and there is no physical evidence of them, visitors still say growling, barking, and the frenzied sound of rushing paws can be heard.

Now, locals know that lack of physical evidence doesn't mean it's just your imagination. Savannah is teeming with other worldly visitors, some more easily heard than seen. So, next time you're in the area, take time to explore and learn about our haunted history! Happy Haunting!

A Visit from Boomer!

We had a fabulous time here on Tybee this weekend! The 2010 Pirate Fest was in town and everyone was decked out in their very best garb for the party. Don't for one minute think that our four footed island friends missed out on the action, either! Oh no...they were having a swash buckling good time with the rest of us!

So sad to see the pirates leave...but they will be back! It's never too early to start planning for the fun of next year!

The Blessing of the Pets on Tybee!

The All Saints Episcopal Church here on Tybee is going to be hosting a wonderful event coming up in October! All pets are invited to attend the Blessing of the Pets..and of course, your humans are welcome too! There will be fun for all, a performance by the Savannah Children's Preparatory Choir, and even the local mounted patrol and K-9 unit will join the festivities!
October 4th is the Feast of Saint Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment. Saint Francis was born in Assisi in 1182. He lived a simply life of poverty, committed to God, and gained a reputation for being a friend to all animals. He established the rule of St. Francis, which today is known as the Order of Saint Francis, or the Franciscans. He died in 1266 at the age of 44. The Blessing of the Pets is done all over the world in remembrance of the love Saint Francis had for all creatures!

Make sure you save the date! The event begins at 4pm Sunday, October 3rd in the church yard at All Saints Episcopal Church. (Perfect timing after you attend the Book signing and coffee tasting fundraiser at Seaside Sisters!)
The church is on Jones Avenue here on Tybee Island. If you are headed in from Savannah, turn right onto Jone Avenue at the second light and go 8 blocks. The church will be on your left! And don't worry, if the weather doesn't cooperate, the festivities will move to the church hall. We can't wait to see everyone there and celebrate that special bond we share with our furry friends!

A Glossary for Dogs!

Surfing the internet is a great way to pass the time on a rainy day like today! You can find all sorts of things on the world wide web. For example, this is a Dog Glossary from FunnyFidos.com...hope this brings a smile to your day!

LEASH: A strap which attaches to your collar, enabling you to lead your person where you want him/her to go.

DOG BED: any soft, clean surface, such as the white bedspread in the guest room or the newly upholstered couch in the living room.

DROOL: Is what you do when your persons have food and you don’t. To do this properly you must sit as close as you can and look sad and let the drool fall to the floor, or better yet, on their laps.

SNIFF: A social custom to use when you greet other dogs. Place your nose as close as you can to the other dogs rear end and inhale deeply, repeat several times, or until your person makes you stop.

GARBAGE CAN: A container which your neighbors put out once a week to test your ingenuity. You must stand on your hind legs and try to push the lid off with your nose. If you do it right you are rewarded with margarine wrappers to shred, beef bones to consume and moldy crusts of bread.

DEAFNESS: This is a malady which affects dogs when their person want them in and they want to stay out. Symptoms include staring blankly at the person, then running in the opposite direction,
or lying down.

THUNDER: This is a signal that the world is coming to an end. Humans remain amazingly calm during thunderstorms, so it is necessary to warn them of the danger by trembling uncontrollably, panting, rolling your eyes wildly, and following at their heels.

WASTEBASKET: This is a dog toy filled with paper, envelopes, and old candy wrapper. When you get bored, turn over the basket and strew the papers all over the house until your person
comes home.

SOFAS: Are to dogs like napkins are to people. After eating it is polite to run up and down the front of the sofa and wipe your whiskers clean.

BATH: This is a process by which the humans drench the floor, walls and themselves. You can help by shaking vigorously and frequently.

LEAN: Every good dogs’s response to the command “sit !”, especially if your person is dressed for an evening out. Incredibly effective before black-tie events.

BUMP: The best way to get your human’s attention when they are drinking a fresh cup of coffee or tea.

GOOSE BUMP: A maneuver to use as a last resort when the Regular Bump doesn’t get the attention you require…..especially effective when combined with The Sniff. See above.

LOVE: Is a feeling of intense affection, given freely and without restriction. The best way you can show your love is to wag your tail. If you’re lucky, a human will love you in return.
